Media have a dual impact on perceptions of black men and boys, influencing public perceptions and attitudes toward them as a group and shaping their self-perceptions. While considerable research has been conducted investigating the relationships between black outcomes, media representations and other elements, the research has not been fully integrated into the work of advocates and organizations working on behalf of social change.
This report seeks to combat distorted media images of black men and boys and improve their opportunities by analyzing and publicizing data developed through extensive audits conducted by scholars and researchers over more than a decade. Using data gleaned from a Social Science Literature Review, a Public Opinion Research Review and a study of Media Consumption Trends Among Black Men, The Opportunity Agenda has released a full report, an executive summary and messaging guidance.
The toolkit's guidance is based on the belief that the theme of opportunity can provide the basis for a narrative that unites social justice messages and constituencies across a range of social issues.
